The Village Council
Your answers straight from the village experts
Many traditional artisans employ the handcrafted techniques of their ancestors, which favored a slow, methodical approach in a small workshop, as opposed to mass production. Today, they preserve these methodologies while intentionally distinguishing their approaches from those of large factories. Respect for the environment, and for animal and human life drive the artwork itself. Natural materials are often a sign that a product is eco-friendly. Additionally, many artisans look for ways to reuse or recycle in their artwork. Some choose to repurpose old wood or fabric. Some recycle glass beads or up-cycle plastic and discarded paper. Others follow practices that conserve resources, like water and energy, and are mindful of the pollutants they release into the environment. Shopping from organizations that promote eco-friendly products is the best way to ensure that you are receiving a unique item that does not damage the world through its making.

Daughter Loved This
Delicate and simplistic design was the perfect gift for my young musician... she put it right on, immediately upon opening it. Has not taken it off since!
Silver Amethyst Necklace
It took a while for this one to arrive as it was on backorder, however I was very pleased with it when it arrived. The pendant is a good size, not too small, and I liked the unusual shape. I really liked the chain that came with it, as not all of the pendants come with that type of chain and I dont like some of the other types that look cheap or more coarse.
Ila Suleyman Leather and beaded jewelry
"My forefathers were predominantly millet and cattle farmers, and they would use the leather of the animals for accessories such as talismans, bangles and necklaces for personal use."
Artisan Multicolor Bead Necklace with Wood Agate and Leather, "Multicolor Wend Panga"$59.99
Ghana's Ila Suleyman designs a necklace featuring five beaded strands threaded with recycled vinyl beads in a mix of pink, blue, brown, yellow, red, orange, black and green. The ends of the multi-strand section are finished with sese wood beads, agate stones, and leather strips serving as spacers. The brass hook clasp complements the beads' diverse colors. The name comes from the Mamprusi word meaning "strong will."
Handmade Recycled Paper Beaded Necklace, "Easy Spirit"$44.99
"An 'easy spirited' design to help you sail through the changing scenes of life," says Ghanaian designer Akwele Suma of this necklace. She crafts each pendant by hand, rolling paper recycled from a variety of printed materials in a palette of colors that includes grey, cream, red, orange, purple, green, blue, black, and brown. The necklace is finished with sese wood beads.
The artist uses the paper at hand so paper colors will vary, making each design a unique example of handcrafted art. These beads receive a protective coat of clear nail polish.
Ebony and ceramic pendant necklace, "All Things New"$44.99
Carved by hand, a pendant of ebony wood reveals abstract motifs. It centers a beaded necklace of ceramic, sese wood and batik on bone. The colorful disks are recycled plastic. The Ghanaian designer names this design which means "Naming Ceremony" in the Mossi language of Northern Ghana. "Celebrate the birth of all things new with this beautiful necklace," he says.
Bone beaded necklace, "Yellow Laafi"$39.99
"I crafted this necklace to bless you with good health," declares Ila Suleyman. From his "Laafi" collection meaning "good health" in the Mamprusi language, the necklace is centered by a cow bone pendant escorted by terracotta and sese wood beads. Yellow beads recycled from plastic bottles and vinyl discs are diligently threaded by hand for a necklace that fastens with a brass hook.
