Day of the Dead Mariachi with Guitar Wood Statuette, "Mariachi de los Muertos"
Guatemalan artisans Juan and Carolina handcraft this pinewood statuette of a mariachi skeleton in the style of the "Day of the Dead." The mariachi is dressed in a traditional black outfit with white stitching and plays his orange guitar. The mariachi's arms are hinged at the elbow so that he can "play" the guitar.
Wood Sculpture from Indonesia, "Yoga Stretch"$47.95
Lithe and limber, an abstracted figure practices a variation of the advanced yoga position >rajakapotasana<, king pigeon pose. Eka carves the figure from richly grained suar wood, its anonymous features representing all humankind. The elegant sculpture exalts the strong, healthy body.
Hand Carved Wood Snake Sculpture, "Cobra"$69.99
In an amazing display of his eye for detail and steady hand, Wayan Rendah carves accacia wood into an incredibly realistic portrayal of a poisonous cobra. The serpent's arched head and coiled tail reveal its strength and charisma in a powerful way. In Bali, the cobra is considered a holy serpent, often portrayed in the company of Siwa, the god of balance. Siwa is one of the three gods in Bali that governs birth, life and death. Siwa is often shown with a cobra that rests on his head and around his neck while he peacefully sits in a meditative state.
