Ernestina Oppong Asante African drums and wood carvings
"Though carving has long been regarded as the preserve of men, I am glad that I have been able not only to infiltrate but to also make an impact on the trade."
"Prior to working with you, I was selling along the roadside, but now I am in my own shop. One thing I love about you is that you advise artisans so we can grow. One of the changes I've observed is that the quality of my work has improved with your advice. I have also... read more

African Wood Djembe Drum, "Sword of Justice"$147.99
Colors burst with every inviting beat of this extraordinary djembe drum. First used in Benin for voodoo rituals, djembe drums now enliven celebrations around the world. Ernestina Oppong Asante combines a passion for carving with music, resulting in a traditional instrument with contemporary flair. The base is carved from tweneboa, a local hardwood of golden grain that highlights the engaging designs. Oppong applies shoe and mansion polish to enhance the wood's smooth, radiant appearance. Iron rod rings are attached to the mouth of the drum and wrapped with cotton to prevent rusting. Through these rings nylon ropes are double-woven, securely fastening the goatskin drumhead. Bright kente cloths adorn the upper part, while the base features brass inlay and majestic beaded swords.
Fair Trade African Wood Djembe Drum, "Give Thanks"$149.99
Superbly crafted of tweneboa wood, this elegant djembe drum features wave motifs that flow around the base. Designer Nana Adu Amankwapam I names it or "Thanks" in the Akan language, as such drums play a vital role during festivals. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cloth, and a macramè cord can be slung over the shoulder.
Artisan Crafted West African Decorative Djembe Yellow Drum, "Yellow Invitation to Peace"$79.99
The Bambara people of Mali suggest the drum gets its name from the saying, which translates as "everyone gather together in peace" - thus defining the djembe's purpose. Christopher Nyasafo celebrates this legendary style of African drum with this decorative mini-djembe, in black and yellow. He hand-carves the goblet-like shape of the drum from tweneboah wood, and gives a weathered appearance to the leather drumhead, which is affixed with iron rings wrapped in cotton.
Hand Carved Tweneboa Wood Bongo Drum from Ghana, "Rhythmic"$104.99
From Ghanaian artisan Mary Charity Owusu comes this captivating bongo drum. Featuring a convenient carrying strap, the bongo is adorned with black and red cotton cord and unique carvings on a black and brown striped base. As you play, enjoy the sound of a West African beat on the professionally tuned goatskin head.
