Handcrafted Signed Papier Mache Mexican Plumed Serpent Mask, "Kukulkan in Colors"$337.99
The feathered serpent of Mesoamerican legend has a human face and a bird perches on his head. To the Maya, he was Kukulkan while the Aztecs called him Quetzalcoatl and in Yucatán he was known as Tepeu Kukumaz. Morneo depicts his own interpretation of the pre-Hispanic deity in bright psychedelic colors. The Mexican artisan works in papier-maché, crafting and painting the signature mask by hand.
Signed Handcrafted Modern Mexican Papier Mache Mask, "Spirit of the Lily"$207.99
A serene human face takes shape in vibrant green, the color of new life. Painted by hand, three calla lilies bloom on the forehead. This evocative mask by Morneo is a modern interpretation of an ancient art form. The Mexican artisan works in papier-maché, crafting and painting the signature mask by hand.
Sandfish Mexican Alebrije Artisan Crafted Sculpture, "Phantasmagorical Sandfish II"$89.99
This scary sandfish navigates the unconscious as an sculpture of powerful artistry. Mexico's Morneo first models the sculpture with wire and then covers it with paper mache; then he paints it with yellow, blue, orange, and green.
Alebrijes are a fairly recent Mexican art form, attributed to Pedro Linares. Unconscious due to illness in 1936, he was presumed near death and yet his dreams were extremely vivid. He tells of a place where all was peaceful and quiet until all of a sudden there appeared a lion with an eagle's head, a rooster with bull's horns and a donkey with butterfly wings. They kept screeching "alebrije, alebrije!" and Pedro began running away. He encountered a man who told him it was not yet his time to be there are and he should continue running towards the exit. In this dream Pedro climbed out of a window and regained consciousness.
Signed Olmec Replica Papier Mache Mask, "Colossal Olmec Head"$174.99
Exploring the mystery of the Olmec heads, Morneo crafts a compelling mask based on pre-Hispanic monuments. Discovered in San Lorenzo and Tres Zapotes, Veracruz and in La Venta, Tabasco, the 17 colossal heads show distinct features and are thought to portray individual leaders. Each one weighs tons, making them some of the best known examples of Olmec art. The Mexican artisan works in papier-maché, crafting and painting the signature mask by hand to suggest the textures of stone.
