Hand Carved Star-Shaped Holiday Ornaments (Set of 3, "Sunny Christmas"
Balinese artisan Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family crafts three holiday tree ornaments that gleam with a subtle, polished luster. Each ornament is hand carved from suar wood in the shape of a star with a blooming sunflower at the center, and includes a looped string for easy hanging. The set of 3 stars is carved on both sides and make lovely decorations beyond the Christmas season. The artisan carries on the wonderful work of her father, Nyoman Subrata.

"Third artwork by members of the Subrata family"
I purchased my first Subrata Barong mask 25 years ago, and it guards the door of the family house since that time. When I established my own consulting business and needed a work apartment I went to Novica to see if I could find another piece by the Subrata Paterfamilias, Nyoman Subrata, who carved our old Barong mask and also a beautiful mer-person sculpture that I have at work. I was sad to see that he had left us, but delighted to see that another family member carries on his legacy. Very happy with this new Barong, who watchfully guards the door to my work residence.

"Magnificent!"
Barong is now busy protecting the house, frightening evil spirits but grinning heartily at the rest of us. He has added a colorful and life-enhancing presence that is a delight to encounter daily. After his arrival I particularly enjoyed watching Barong dance rituals on YouTube and highly recommend them to anyone contemplating ordering the mask since you ll understand his significance and character better. Incidentally, I had no trouble hanging him on the wall with a tiny bit of ingenuity.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.
