Bold Natural Wood Mask of the Balinese Monkey King, "Epic Monkey King"
An extraordinary depiction of majestic elegance and a courageous heart, this mask of Sugriwa, King of the Monkeys, is imbued with the artistic grace of legends. Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family hand-carves this ally of Rama from suar wood with sumptuous detail, as Sugriwa's fearsome expression is softened by an ornate headdress and crown. Subrata's excellence as a wood carver are evident in the refined perfection of her work, rendering this mask a true treasure.
Sugriwa is one of the Ramayana's many heroes. He commanded a simian army to help Rama in rescuing his beloved Sita from the evil king Rahwana.

"Magnificent!"
Barong is now busy protecting the house, frightening evil spirits but grinning heartily at the rest of us. He has added a colorful and life-enhancing presence that is a delight to encounter daily. After his arrival I particularly enjoyed watching Barong dance rituals on YouTube and highly recommend them to anyone contemplating ordering the mask since you ll understand his significance and character better. Incidentally, I had no trouble hanging him on the wall with a tiny bit of ingenuity.

"Wedding gift"
Absolutely beautiful. I gave this pair as a wedding gift and the recipients loved them. A unique piece of art has more meaning than a store bought, massed produced article and supports the craftsmen and their family. Please dont hesitate if considering a carving by the Subrata Family. You will not be disappointed.

"Legong Kraton Dancer"
VERY BEAUTIFUL carving. I love it. Carving takes me back to Legong performances in Ubud.

Preserving Traditions
Subrata has been a master carver for many years. He is one of the original Novica artisans and now provides work to other artisans at his carving workshop. He has trained his daughter, Indrawati, in all aspects of his business and she will keep the workshop going when Subrata no longer is able to.
