Jose Canil transforms pinewood into a cheerful, colorful mask of a guacamaya (macaw), which the ancient Maya associated with the sun's strength and the power of fire. "Macaws are becoming a threatened species because people are illegally catching them either to sell them as pets or for their exotic plumage. Their habitat is also being destroyed thanks to deforestation. As inhabitants of this planet, we should raise consciousness about respecting our Mother earth and all her children," believes the Guatemalan artisan.
