Cultural Surrealist Landscape Painting in Red from Java, "King Without Crown"
Depicted as a traditional Indonesian shadow puppet, a king without a crown is depicted alongside a regal chair against a background of stylized trees and clouds in hues of red and orange. Javanese artist Harman paints this surrealist composition that draws influence from Indonesian folk art. Says the artist, "A king without a crown is a picture of a great leader with a heart to serve his people. A king who lives like ordinary people as if he is not the king and puts aside all glamorous things."
Signed Painting of a Countryside Cottage from Guatemala, "Magic Village"
Beneath the shade of two trees, a charming countryside cottage is framed against the majesty of Guatemala's mountains. Hugo Pichaya paints this tranquil scene in a folk art style, using careful dabs of the paintbrush that capture the beauty of nature. Says the artist, "Guatemala is a beautiful place to get inspired. In each tiny corner, there is a marvelous landscape. We are surrounded by nature, volcanoes, mountains, flora, and fauna; we are very fortunate. I try to transmit this in my pieces." in Spanish.
Oil Painting of a Village in Guatemala at Sunset, "Shepherd"
At the end of the day, a shepherd walks his sheep through the streets of Comalapa. Neighbors go about their daily shores, carrying firewood and water while a boy plays with a puppy. "I saw this myself in my own hometown," says artist Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal, who signs his work as "Boni." "I wanted to share it through a painting."
Titled "Ovejera" in Spanish.
