Signed Impressionist Painting of a Laughing Man from Ghana, "Golden Gap"

“My name is Kwesi Botchway and I am a painter. I was born in Nima, Ghana. I am a shy person and love music.

“I loved drawing while growing up. I was informally trained by the street artist Ricklaw, who used to live in Kanda. I attended the Ghanatta College of Arts to learn and improve my skills.

“Starting on my own wasn’t easy. I had to take other jobs to buy the art materials, but unfortunately, I couldn’t sell my creations. Despite this, I was not discouraged. One difficulty for me is speaking and painting in public. It was very hard for me to talk to people and I am happy to have overcome it now. This is helping me sell my paintings.

“One of my silliest moments in life was when I walked to a shop to buy an acrylic paint only to realize my money had been stolen. I stood there laughing and didn’t know what to do because I was surprised it had happened.

“I am inspired by life and cultures, the way people live their lives and how they dress. I feel more connected to nature while painting. My favorite thing about my work is how I apply my colors. I use acrylic paints and canvas for my works.

“My hope is to be recognized around the world with my paintings. My dream is to have a foundation that will put smiles on the faces of street and homeless children.”
