Narrow eyes are menacing beneath brows like red flames while the headdress suggests a spider's web. Designed to strike fear into the hearts of intruders, this mask is the work of Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. "These are used by the Afare tribe of Ethiopia at harvest time to scare away persons who want to get into the farm and steal their crops," the artisan says. Appropriately, he names the piece Hoo, a Hausa word that means "Scaring."

Abdul is such a talented craftsman and artist, as well. I have had this beautiful box sitting on my coffee table for quite some time now. My apologies to Abdul for the overdue review. Thanks again, Abdul!

The mask lacks vibrance. The colors are dull. Very Primitive in nature. The red doesnt appear as vivid as the photo. The size is nice. I recognize that one cant duplicate a mask over and over exactly due to it being handmade.
