La Tunantada is a traditional Peruvian dance characterized by satiric depictions of Spanish conquistadores, portrayed here in this retablo by Erika Ulloa. She crafts an intricate scene of ceramic within a wood box, diligently painting the figures by hand. This striking retablo opens with floral doors that swing on faux leather hinges.

Erica Ulua brings both great imagination and great skill to her retablos. La Tunantada is the fourth of her lovely works that I have purchased. All have been been nativity scenes of one sort or another.
