By Erika Ulloa, this enchanting nativity scene is set in the Peruvian highlands. Alpacas kneel beside the manger where the tiny Christ child is laid on colorful Andean weavings. Little Jesus and the shepherd boys wear traditional apparel. The artisan crafts the wooden box to house this retablo, or diorama, and paints it in vivid colors. The figures are carefully modeled from clay and painted by hand.

"Beautiful llamas!"
This retablo incorporates a nice twist on the Christmas story: instead of lambs or camels, we see beautiful llamas giving warmth to the baby Jesus. Jose and Maria are dressed the way you would see them in a Catholic Cathedral, but the baby Jesus looks a little Peruvian to me, wearing his little chullo hat. Theres also a man and woman dressed in traditional Peruvian garments. Theyre the llama keepers. Love the big flowers in the background and around the top and sides of the retablo. This Nativity scene is more beautiful than any mass produced Nativity out there. Really hard to buy as a gift, because youll want to keep it!

"Christ, the Prince of Peace"
With her usual consummate artistry and imagination, Erika Ulloa offers a prayer for peace in her depiction of the birth of the Christ Child changing soldiers from agents of war into bringers of aid and comfort. For me at least, this takes just another nativity scene in my collection to an instrument of contemplation and of motivation for working for social change. It is a true work of art, that changes the viewer.

"La Tunantada"
Erica Ulua brings both great imagination and great skill to her retablos. La Tunantada is the fourth of her lovely works that I have purchased. All have been been nativity scenes of one sort or another.
