"In every one of my creations I hope you will be able to recognize my great love for this art form."
Alejandro Chávez was born on January 30, 1956. He specializes in the creations of retablos, a kind of reverent diorama-altar typical of the Ayacucho region of Peru. He learned this technique as a boy in school, when he was 17 years old and living in Ayacucho, where his parents moved when he was just 2 years old.
When Chávez returned to his hometown, he began working in the studio of Angel Castro, a master artisan. Here he refined his techniques in the creation of retablos, eagerly learning the art from his teacher. Later, Chávez formed his own workshop after the death of his teacher, continuing to give shape to this art form. The customs and traditions of the Andean people emerge in every piece.
"In every one of my creations I hope you will be able to recognize my great love for this art form. You will also fine the contributions of my wife as well, for she molds the characters. I am currently teaching my nieces and nephews as well.
"I sincerely hope that you enjoy your retablo, which brings together the culture and traditions of the Andes."
I purchased a painted wood mirror, ""Jesus in Ayacucho,"" because I liked the colors and the nativity scene. I was not disappointed! The life in this work is apparent throughout. Much color and detail, the figures placed around the frame are full of character. I highly recommend this artist's work for its craftsmanship and quality.

I just received the mirror retable made by Alexandro. All I can say is ""beautiful"". The workmanship is magnificent. I have already hung it on the wall in my front hallway so all can see it when they come in. Thank you!!!
We received the ""Huts"" plaster ornaments today, and we are so moved by their beauty and craftsmanship. We will be proud to display them in our home and share them with friends who have visited and love Peru. Thank you, Senor Chavez, for sharing your talent with us, and thank you, Novica, for making it possible!

I ordered the mask collection retablo, and it is so sweet! What attention and artistry went into all the tiny, perfect details! This is something i am proud to display.
THE WORKMANSHIP AND ARTISTRY OF THESE PIECES IS EXQUISITE. SUCH ATTENTION TO DETAIL SHOWS A TRUE LOVE OF THE ARTIST FOR HIS SUBJECT. I LOVE NOVICA AND THE CHANCE IT GIVES ME TO SUPPORT THE ARTS AND CRAFTS OF OTHER COUNTRIES. P. L.
Beautiful work. I will be ordering others to expand my collection. God bless.
We received the Mirror:'Chapel of Bethlehem', a couple of days ago. It is to be a gift for Christmas. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes as I saw the colorful beauty of Alejandro's creation for the first time. I have since repacked it, ready to take to the recipients of this awesome piece of artwork. Thanks to Novica for allowing Alejandro's art to reach the world. J. Knoke
I am delighted by the craftsmanship and fine attention to detail in the picture frame I purchased - 'Tuna Harvest'. It depicts a lively scene of life in the Andes, full of colour and spirit. It brightens my home and lifts my heart each time I look at it. Thank you for making something so beautiful and evocative of your wonderful country.
This is the second retablo purchased from this artist. The work is excellent. Shipping is fast. The item is extremely well-packed. A pleasure to do business with this person and Novica. Un producto excellente. Muchisimas Gracias.

I love the retablo of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is very beautiful, and there have been lots of compliments from people who have seen it. It also helps me feel more connected to my mother's homeland. Thank you!
I am just thrilled with Alejandro's work. It's beautiful. And the packaging from Novica was fabulous. I look forward to more!

Just wanted to leave a feedback on how pleased I was with Mr. Chavez's ""Mask Shop"" retablo I received today in the mail from the Peru office. The packing was impeccably done and the post card, artist info sheet, title card was a much appreciated bonus and a special touch. The retablo on the other hand just blew me away. The photo's did not do it justice. Mr. Chavez's work is beautiful. I've seen a lot of ratablos over the years and he's right up there with my favorites. Thanks to all involved in the process of making and selling this item. Finaly, to Mr. Chavez, keep the creative juices flowing my dear friend and I hope you and you loved ones continue to prosper in the love and joy of the art making process.
We purchased ""Party of Masks"" as a gift for a friend on the occasion of her doctorate in Peruvian theater performance and studies. We were proud to gift it, and it has become a treasured piece for her. Thank you, Sr. Chavez. It was a perfect gift.
Sr. Chavez - muchisima gracias por el retablo / espejo que se llama ""Little Circus"". Ya me recibí esta semana y es una cosita perfecta para mi hogar. Mis saludos a ""Team Peru"" tambien. Que todo Uds tienen un buen Navidad! Compraré más obras!
I am about to order my third retablo. The first was a gift that was extremely well received. The second for myself, because I liked the first so much. The third will also be a gift but at least I will be able to see it often. Thanks for the endearing and colorful works of art.

Dear Alejandro, I bought one of your mirrors for my daughter on her birthday. I love your retablos, their sense of energy and joy. The more layers of activity in them, the happier I get. One day I would like to go to Peru, a country with such a mysterious history and great traditions. I would also like to save up to buy a really big retablo with hundreds of people in it! I think your art is a celebration of life, the greatest gift from God we ever receive. Thank you for your artistry. The other thing I liked about buying a mirror from you is how beautifully it was wrapped. It showed that you treasure your work and want to protect it from harm. So it arrived in perfect condition and was very exciting to unwrap. You made a huge contribution to a happy birthday for my daughter.
Dear Mr. Chavez, I just received your retablo ""Yawar Fiesta "". I Love, Love it The figures are so life like and the colors are so vivid This retablo is so unusual and I will treasure it always. I feel that I now have a little bit of Peru in our home. The packaging was done with great care and as all my purchases from Novica it arrived in excellent condition Thank you for working with NOVICA so that we can have the opportunity to purchase your beautiful works of art. After traveling to Peru with my best friend this summer, I was elated to find this website. I absolutely love the variety of items and the personal stories of each artist. My friend was admiring the retablos when we were there, and regretted not buying one as soon as she set foot on U.S. soil. I could not have found a better birthday gift for her. She was so excited to get the mask collection retablo by Alejandro Chavez, she was almost moved to tears. His work is incredibly beautiful, and this piece brings back such sweet memories of the Peruvian people and the lovely country itself. I cannot wait to order something for my own home, and cannot even describe how these traditional folk art pieces allow us to travel back to Peru while staring at them. Thank you Alejandro, for sharing the beauty of your craft and your people with us!
We received our ""Little Carnival"" picture frame and upon opening it and seeing the beautiful colours and exquisite workmanship in this creation we were made instantly happy! We have put it in a position in our home where we can see it all the time and each time we do it is enjoyed even more. Thank you Alejandro for this beautiful piece of your art from the Andes and from within your heart.
We have received our second item from you Alejandro, the mask mirror, and we are just as happy with it as our Little Carnival frame. Such beautiful and colorful work - you are indeed a blessed man to have such talent and such a beautiful place in the world to do it in. Thank you again!

We received our Retablo today. I had ordered the Chapel of Santa Ana for us, and 2 of Our Lady of Fatima for friends who are women Pastors. My friends loved the Fatima Retablo. I thought the one would display it in her office at the church, but she surprised me by wanting to take it home where she would have it with her more personal and meaningful artwork. And we just love the Chapel of Santa Ana. In this advent season we are establishing our first of many seasonal traditions and this retablo serves as our Nativity set. The detailing is just how it is described, Alejandro obviously does take pride in and loves his art. The first two gifts were so well received I may order more. The shipping: I took the quickest level of shipping; ordered late on a Thursday night, received tracking information on Monday that the package had been delivered to the Lima, Peru DHL facility, and received the package here in Ohio on Wednesday morning. As with all Novica orders, everything was wonderfully packaged and gift-wrapped, with charming details like a small fabric and ceramic figurine on the bow - a taste of what lay inside. All that, for a good price, and fair trade too. Alejandro, espero que son capaces de experimentar algo de la alegría que hemos experimentado. Bendiga a usted ya su familia.
Beautiful retablo. Gave it as a gift and my friend thought it was wonderful. Great work and a great price!

What a happy, colorful and beautiful mirror...I just love it. The artist's sense of spirit and joy of life is so evident. I will be back. Thank you so much.
I bought a ""Blue Christmas"" retablo from Mr. Chavez. I can't tell you how intricately designed and detailed it was! It is absolutely beautiful. Every year when I display it a Christmas I will think of you and pray for God's many blessings on you and your family!
I have bought the ‘Cross of Lamentations’ Retablo, ‘Fiesta in My Homeland’ mirror and the set of four Christmas decorations. I love the attention to detail in all these lovely pieces; especially how ‘Fiesta in My Homeland’ captures the ambiance of Andean life.
Absolutely unbelievable. The craftsman ship is astonishing.
I have purchased 5 items and am very, very pl;eased with his work. I receive compliments from all who see the pieces, along with questions about where I got them. Everyone who received them as a gift were impressed with the little wooden figures attached to the raffia figure attached to the raffia bow.
