Superbly rendered in hues of red, blue, and cream, K. Baka's wall hanging depicts a trio of fish swimming in opposite directions. The Akans call it Nyansapow, "Wisdom Knot." In Ghana, tradition says that if you will undo a knot a wise man made, be sure you are at least as wise or wiser. Skillfully carved from cedar by Nana Frimpong, this stately stool portrays oneness among the chief, his elders and his people.

Frimpong is chief carver for Otumfour, the King of the Ashanti. He has a deep interest in the culture of his native Africa. Each of his sculptures is one of a kind, painstakingly crafted by hand, thus each stool will not necessarily have the same designs on the seat, however the design of the base will always be the same.

Ama drinks water from a huge bowl, her skirt and earrings flapping with the wind. Ama is a sweet Akan girl whose name means "one born on a Saturday". Ernestina Oppong Asante surrounds the child with more bowls and pots in this endearing threadwork composition. She applies one thread at a time with diligent care for detail as she works with a palette that includes yellow, brown, dark brown, green, black, orange, and blue.

Beautiful and sonorous, this djembe drum depicts an African elephant. It comes from Daniel Asante's skill and imagination. Carved by hand, the pachyderm holds the cup-shaped drum in its back. Hand-woven kente cloth surrounds it. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.

The djembe originated in Benin, where it is used during voodoo rites, and has been introduced into neighboring countries. It is indispensable in contemporary reggae.
