Villagers go about their daily round in the Guatemalan town of San Juan Comalapa. Women come and go carrying clay water jars and a young shepherd leads his lambs to pasture. Set in a tropical landscape of rich natural beauty, this painting by Boni offers a glimpse of his homeland. In the foreground, a girl throws water a flirty young swain and her dog growls a warning, "Stay away!"

The setting sun gilds the sky and bathes a distant volcano in golden light. Adults go about their chores — carrying firewood, a water jug and a hoe while leading a lamb. But the sandy village street is alive with laughter as children fly kites in the early evening breeze. This delightful painting by Boni is filled with life and color. "Kites are an important tradition in November," the artist explains. They are flown on November 1, All Saints Day, to feel closer to loved ones who have passed away. "I love this tradition, the art of crafting kites, and all their colors," he adds. These kites have been designated as a Cultural Heritage of Guatemala.

Rounding a curve, a country lane opens onto a dramatic vista of Lake Atitlan. Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal depicts the serene waters of the deep, cold lake set in the crater of an extinct volcano.

At the end of the day, a shepherd walks his sheep through the streets of Comalapa. Neighbors go about their daily shores, carrying firewood and water while a boy plays with a puppy. "I saw this myself in my own hometown," says artist Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal, who signs his work as "Boni." "I wanted to share it through a painting."

Bright hues travel with you to a land of great sages. Artist Seksan Sing-on of Thailand uses watercolor on paper to create this impressionist composition of the famous Wihan Buraphachan temple, the eternal house of master Luang Pu Man Phurithatto. After years of meditation between forests and sharing his wisdom with his apprentices, the master's final home rests in this famous Lanna-style temple, which welcomes the world with a sense of serenity.

Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal celebrates the beauty of Lake Atitlan with its cold, blue waters. Working in oils on canvas, he paints the view from San Antonio Palopó, focusing on the town's lovely church. "Pause and appreciate the extraordinary view of the lake. Stand at the entrance of the chapel and you can see the white cross and the picturesque village. This is a quiet yet charismatic town and I so enjoy coming here with my family," the artist says.

Dawn bathes the countryside in golden yellow light. Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal celebrates the beauty of Lake Atitlán and the charm of San Antonio Palopó. "Sunrise on Lake Atitlán is a splendid sight. The air is cool and fresh. The landscape here is as impressive as the people and it's easy to feel at home," the artist says.

Neighbors go about their daily shores in a small Guatemalan village. Carrying a hoe over his shoulder, a man walks homeward past women drawing water from the well and a boy who feeds the chickens and turkey. An older woman kneels beneath a shade tree to weave on a backstrap loom. "This is a scene I saw in my own hometown," says artist Bonifacio Maxia Cutzal, who signs his work as "Boni." "I was on my way home from delivering some paintings when I paused to watch this family at work, and I wanted to share a glimpse of my country."
