In an effort to capture the history of his country, Guatemalan artist Hugo Pichiya paints this beautiful and tranquil composition. Across lake waters, the ruins of the Castle of San Felipe de Lara can be seen. In its day, this Spanish colonial fort guarded the entrance to Lake Izabal. Says the artist, "Guatemala is a beautiful place to become inspired; in each small corner there is a marvelous landscape. We are surrounded by nature, volcanoes, mountains, and flora and fauna; we are very fortunate. It is because of this that I want to transmit these elements into my work."

This beloved street draws both travelers and locals into its timeless embrace, serving as the captivating subject of Hugo Pichiya's luminous oil painting. “This historic city has always been an endless wellspring of inspiration for me,” the artist says. “Its cobblestone streets, colonial architecture and the commanding presence of the Volcán de Agua (Volcano of Water) create a singular atmosphere that breathes history and nostalgia. In this composition, I sought to capture the exquisite beauty of Calle de las Campanas by highlighting the striking contrast between its neutral-toned architecture and the vibrant life that bougainvillea and nature bring to these ancient stones.”
