Details

Delicate, blossoming foliage twists and coils its way across the smooth, alluring surface of this Cajamarca-style tray by Asunta Pelaez. In a process demanding incredible patience and attention to detail, Pelaez first shapes the wood and cuts the glass to size. She traces the pattern in India ink and paints the detailed designs. Finally, she glues the glass to the wood and applies golden paint to the borders of the piece. The entire process can take seven days or more.

Your Purchase Makes a Difference!

In 2016, Asunta was diagnosed with a serious throat disease. She has no health insurance and uses her earnings from NOVICA to fund her treatments. She also has a husband and her employees who depend on her. Through all this, she has shown such perseverance and strength and continues to work hard and balance her responsibilities.

Asunta uses the traditional Peruvian technique of reverse painted glass. Brought to Peru during the colonial period, every detail is done by hand taking great skill and patience. She teaches the technique to others through her workshop and hopes those in her workshop will continue to practice and pass down the traditional technique to keep it alive for future generations.

Asunta’s sales have increased more than 3x since starting with Novica. When Asunta first started out, she had a small workshop with 2 part-time assistants. Now she is able to rent a larger space close to her home and support more employees.

Asunta employs three single mothers in her workshop who support a total of 6 children, one having a disability. Asunta and the mothers rely on their sales for steady income to support themselves, their children and their children's education.

Asunta employs 5 artisans full-time and one temporary artisan. The temporary artisan is another NOVICA artisan and helps Asunta with the most physically demanding parts of her work because of her illness.

Asunta’s sales are critical to supporting herself, her elder husband and her 5 employees along with their families. Her personal health situation makes each sale that much more important.

The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.

Thank you Asunta for the beautiful trio of mirrors, I adore them! The way you presented the Floral Glory - beautifully wrapped and carefully packaged was a mirror reflection of the same care and love you pour into your creations.
