This distortion of the land masses coincides with the period of colonialism that gave rise to the expansion of the European system and customs, which in the case of Peru, blended with the local way of life to create a unique culture in the most positive of interpretations. Rivero chose the ornate, classical style to address the subject of colonialism on his country. Working depth into his design, Rivero illustrates the topographical features of the world while outlining each continent for a raised effect, highlighting raised silver leaf decoration in each corner.
