Pre-Hispanic Replica Nicaraguan Ceramic Vase, "Serpent Woman"
Shipping Timeframe: 3 to 6 weeks. Delivery Estimate
Legend tells how the local ruler had a beautiful wife of strange and mysterious habits. Each Friday, she would take much food to a secret place on the river. One of the chief's servants followed her and what he saw terrified him. He told her husband, who followed her the next week. The woman sat down on the shore and struck the water with her hand. Out came an enormous serpent, with whom she passed the time eating and talking. Enraged, the jealous husband killed his wife. But the furious snake agitated the water so the currents overflowed the riverbank and destroyed the ancient village. The survivors built a new town, which they named Serpent Woman — cihuacoatl, or ciuaco, meaning Cebaco.
Maria Arauz tells the story on a cylindrical vase of beautifully incised terracotta. "This explains the name of today's town of Sebaco," she says.

"Thrille to add to my collection of Marias work!"

This is the fourth piece by Maria and her family that I have purchased, and I love it like I love her other work! I find it more magnificent in the hand than in the photo. The execution of her work is exquisite. Even my husband who typically pays little attention to this passion of mine was very impressed with this piece!

"So excited to share this piece with all who visit!"

I am blown away by Maria Arauzs ceramic pieces! I have now purchased four of hers. The craftsmanship is tremendous, and the design of each is so unique and expertly executed. I have only recently discovered Nicaraguan ceramics, and love to share them with everyone who comes to my home. This particular piece is my favorite, with its asymmetrical lip, is my favorite. I continually check to see what else she may be making.
