Ivory Coast Wood Peg Sculpture, "Kong Protection"
Two faces are certain to bring protection according to the beliefs of the Kong people of Ivory Coast. They peg this staff-like image on the land, their garden or home. Salihu Ibrahim replicates this legendary image featuring a male and female faces, though the female traits are predominant. Ibrahim carves the sese wood peg by hand and adorns it with recycled glass beads on cotton twine. Ibrahim applies clay to achieve an aged, weathered finish.
