Details

This beautiful doll bears a story on her lovely face. Gusti Ngurah Semarajaya paints a scene from the Calonarang, which tells the story of Rangda, mother of Erlangga who ruled Bali in the 10th century. Condemned for practicing black magic, she summoned evil spirits to fight Erlangga, and her powers were so strong, he was forced to ask Barong for aid. Eventually the evil Rangda was defeated.

Semarajaya sculpts the elegant head, hands and feet from crocodile wood and dresses her in handloomed ikat cloth. The word means "to knot" in the Malaysian language, and the threads are tie-dyed before weaving.

The doll can be posed in a variety of positions. Semarajaya suggests it can be displayed alone or on a base such as a drinking glass.
