From Oaxaca's Jesus and Roxana Hernandez comes this imaginatively decorated armadillo alebrije which makes a whimsical addition to a home desk, curio cabinet or side table. Mexican artisans carve the figurine by hand from copal wood; it is then painted by hand in an incredible variety of colors and patterns in both vertical and horizontal bands. Even the animal's removable tail is covered with several unique designs. Small parts are separated for shipping to protect from breakage.
It is said that Oaxaca's alebrije tradition descends directly from Mexico City papier mache artisan Pedro Linares (1906-1992). When he was 30, he became seriously ill and fell into a sort of coma. While he was unconscious, he had a most fantastic dream. He was caught between the land of the living and the dead; the place looked like a forest and was populated with creatures with body parts belonging to different animals. The beings repeatedly uttered the word alebrije, and when Linares woke up, he recreated these figures in vivid colors using papier mache techniques and called them alebrijes . His work became famous and eventually influenced artisans in the state of Oaxaca who decided to craft alebrijes using traditional wood carving methods and according to that region's world vision.

Have at least a dozen sculptures from Jesus and Roxana...even a armadillo! Keep hoping a coatimundi is offered by somebody someday!

Purple is my favorite color and I love armadillos so I had to get this. Being a lot smaller than many alebrijes but still a decent size its also quite affordable. It looks exactly like the one in the picture.

This piece of artwork is just so beautiful, with incredible detail. The craftsmanship is breathtaking and the colors are brilliant. I had lived in Mexico 30 years ago while studying at the Instituto Allende (I was a student & graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago 1989 and the Mexican study abroad program was through SAIC). It is a beautiful country with beautiful, gracious people. This piece helps me remember my time there.
