"This design takes the shape of the gourds that flourish alongside our corn fields and are seen only in the central valleys of Oaxaca,"Anakarem muses. Working in the time-honored black pottery tradition of Oaxaca, with techniques learned from her father, she crafts a stunning decorative vase. The motifs are incised by hand and the fired clay is burnished to a sheen with a piece of quartz or obsidian.
