Working with recycled materials, Ghanaian artisan Akwele Suma makes a statement for ecological preservation. She chooses strips of poster and magazine paper in tones of blue, forming them into helix shapes that dangle from brass hooks.
The artist uses the paper at hand so paper colors will vary, making each design a unique example of handcrafted art. These beads receive a protective coat of clear nail polish.
You can find our recycled paper dangle earrings 'Beach at Dawn' by Akwele Suma in jewelry categories such as Eco-Friendly Earrings, No Stone Earrings, Paper Earrings and Dangle Earrings. Enjoy exploring these sections for other Novica treasures.
Enabling Education
Akwele is currently supporting the education of her own child and three others, from primary school all the way to the university level.
Microcredit Financing
Akwele Suma has received 5 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $200 and the most recent for $300. Proceeds were used to invest in the purchase of raw materials such as paper, glue, hooks, and clasps; and also to employ additional workers to assist her in production.
Empowering Women
The Women's Empowerment badge is awarded to female artisans or artisan groups that are led by women.
Caring for Children
Akwele has one child that she cares for.
