This lovely cotton shawl features narrow white stripes on midnight black cotton. Woven by hand on a backstrap loom, it evokes the mountain paths in Mexico's Chiapas highlands. Lorenza Perez is a master of this ancestral Maya weaving technique, and a rebozo like this one can take anywhere from 28 to 40 hours to complete. Textured geometric borders at each end are embroidered by hand, and the fabric alternates woven areas with unwoven warp threads, to achieve a textile that drapes beautifully.

"Nice colors, great stichwork, and a lot of character"
I was somewhat on the fence about how cartoonish the birds looked in the picture, but I love birds and I love purple, so I figured it was worth getting. Up close, you can see just how detailed and perfect the stitchwork is. It also becomes clear that she is depicting these birds in naturalistic poses that I recognize from my own birds.Ms. Perez is clearly both a great seamstress and a great observer of nature, and she also has a good color sense. I also really like the composition on this piece.
