Seeming to speak, red lips open to call out a warning perceived through wide eyes. Juliana Akandas designs a beautiful mask embellished with rich brass repoussé and painted by hand. Colorful beads and tufts of cotton thread pierce the nose, and the face curves like a crescent moon. Akandas names this mask Tayibo (evil spirits). In the Volta region of Ghana, such masks are used to frighten spirits from the rice plantations before harvest time.
