Elephants in Madhubani art are symbols of strength, prosperity and wisdom. This mirrored composition by India’s Devendra Kumar Jha and Family, rendered with natural dyes on handmade paper, evokes harmony, companionship and balance. It depicts two richly adorned elephants, positioned face-to-face, their trunks raised and intertwined around a leafy branch. They boast traditional textile-like saddle cloths and ornamental detailing on their faces and bodies. The bold use of black for the elephants contrasts beautifully with the vibrant palette of red, yellow, blue and green, bringing out the majesty and festive spirit associated with these mighty creatures. The background, filled with rhythmic wave-like motifs, symbolizes abundance and continuity, while the patterned border adds to the traditional aesthetic of Mithila art.
