It is said that Kala Rau was offering mortals the elixir of immortality, known as Tirta Amerta, which he stole from the gods and goddesses. The Moon Goddess Ratih informed Vishnu, who threw his discus at Kala Rau to kill him. But since Kala Rau had just drunk the elixir and it was passing through his throat, even though he was beheaded, the only thing that survives in immortality is his head. It is said that now Kala Rau travels the skies in search of Ratih to exact his revenge. When he finds her, he tries to eat her, thus causing a lunar eclipse.
