Garuda is the eagle god who travels between heaven and earth. His image is very common in Balinese cremation ceremonies. Legend says that two gargantuan underworld serpents enslaved the Garuda. When he broke free, he flew directly to the heavens and became immortal.

Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family carves the intricate and beautiful mask by hand of Balinese suar wood. The artisan carries on the extraordinary art work of her late father, Nyoman Subrata.

This relief panel, made from suar wood, features a turtle and two fish swimming without a care in their ocean haven, surrounded by seaweed. Special attention is given to the scales of the fish and shell of the turtle, adding both texture and a lifelike quality to the panel. Even the ocean waves are not forgotten, as they are depicted rolling gently across the top of the design. It is carefully handcrafted by Made Mulyani of Bali.
