When the menorah is lit on the Eve of the Shabbat, it symbolizes Shalom Bayit, meaning peace and harmony in the family. "We designed this runner so you may decorate your table with a little piece of our community," says the Guatemalan artisan. He weaves the cotton table runner on a pedal loom, giving form to the white menorah over a brown and black background. Hernández includes bands of concentric diamonds, his family's trademark pattern, in light and darker shades of brown, as well as red and black. Desak fondly recalls the clear river water and beautiful scenery of her childhood. But her favorite memories were ones spent with her father, bringing him lunch at the farm and scaring away the birds. After he passed, Desak and her 10 siblings found themselves struggling to survive.

Everything changed in 2001 when she joined NOVICA. Today, her gorgeous batik robes and kimonos are internationally known, and her workshop employs 15 artisans who assist her in producing traditional and contemporary batik garments.
