The exotic beauty of the Japanese wonder shell is detailed in hand-painted shibori over the indigo background of this cotton wall hanging from El Salvador. "This design is about sea life and the beauty in it. I am always surprised about the fact that many animals feel protected by shells," says Grace Guirola. Expert in the art of textile dyes, she extracts color from indigo leaves harvested in her family's hacienda, while women from the community paint the shell by hand and sew the wall hanging.
