Hefting a heavy pot, a West African woman carries her sleeping infant on her back. This one-of-a-kind cotton wall hanging is the work of Gladys Ayorkor Ayi, who uses time-honored batik techniques to create the artwork. Designs are painted on fabric with wax, and then the fabric is dyed to achieve the desired pattern. These steps may be repeated with different colors until the scene is complete.
