Akuaba Motif Fertility Shawl from 100% Cotton, "Akuaba"
Details
Ghanaian artisan Charity Jobarteh weaves the fabric for this handmade shawl from 100% cotton. Fringes on the ends provide added interest for this unique piece. The fabric is screen-printed with a repeating pattern in black and cream depicting the traditional Akan fertility dolls known as akuaba. The dolls are traditionally worn on the backs of Akan women who hope to conceive. The spirit of these fertility dolls is also present in the shawl as the piece pays homage to this aspect of Akan culture.
