May this year bring you all the happiness and good fortune that you have brought to my family."My name is Nyoman Karsa and I was born on December 31, 1967. I learned woodcarving from my father and the senior artists of my village, for example, the famous Wayan Winten. I have worked in my own art studio and shop since 1987.
"I usually carve sculptures from ebony, suar, crocodile, and hibiscus woods. Each of the woods has specific characteristics of color, durability, and aroma. Ebony comes from Sulawesi, while the others grow locally. Mass media and the everyday traditional lifestyle of our environment and community are the sources of my inspiration. Some of my pieces deal with traditional dances, the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, sports, animals, and abstract figures.
"When creating a sculpture, I first see it in my mind, making an image of how it would look on a log or a piece of wood. I make a draft on the wood piece, chiseling the initial form and detailing the parts, finishing it off by smoothing and polishing.

I have just received your Raven cane. I was expecting what I saw in the picture on the website, however, upon receiving it I realized that I had gotten much more. The rich brown color is fantastic - almost black and it is slightly lighter around the raven's face giving the bird more character. The size is perfect too; it fits perfectly in your hand and the raven is perfectly proportionate to the cane itself. The carving of the cane and the raven is exceptional. Thanks for the great work of art!

I just received a lovely wood carving of "Shy Mouse." It is absolutely exquisite. The wood grain is beautiful and the carving is quite wonderful. The little mouse face is so sweet and the whole carving really does look like a shy mouse. You just want to cuddle the little guy - he is very lifelike. Thanks for a beautiful piece!

I just received the Abstract Relax carving which, like the three other carvings I also ordered from other Novica artists, far exceeded expectations and the workmanship and quality is astounding. You cannot appreciate the incredible craftsmanship on this or other pieces from the images on Novica's website. Of the 4 pieces I got today, this is the most breathtaking - it is easily the most beautiful piece of art I've ever owned.

Nyoman Karsa, Greetings Might I offer a few lines concerning a Walking Stick which I have purchased? The Stick came this date(19 May2008) safely from 1/2 way around the world. I was 1st most impressed with the packing. However, the workmanship and quality shown in the Walking Stick exceeded my expectations! Nyoman Karsa a skill and understanding of the features of a horse(I bought the "Horse Head Cane) are uncanny. His skill in woodworking are without peer, in my opinion. The Walking Stick was a gift to my wife. She owned, for some 03 decades, an Arabian Stallion. This cane catches all the Fire that her horse embodied; and will be a reminder to her of that unique Stallion. In this day of mass production; a Craftsman is a truly a marvelous work and a wonder. My carved field mouse has arrived and I am thrilled. My tennis friends gave me the money to purchase it. I have brought it up to the courts so everyone could see it .
