Presented by Indonesian artisan Yuni Kristina, this gorgeous silk shawl is hand-stamped using the batik process. The wrap combines saffron, espresso, and cherry-colored traditional motifs on a paprika background. The truntum pattern dominates the shawl, symbolizing unconditional love. The kawung motif is thought to have been designed by the king of Mataram and represents universal good will.

Women of the Guatemalan textile arts cooperativeK’amolon K’i K’ojonel (meaning “let’s get together”)collaborate on this elegant shawl. From the women whodye the bamboo rayon fibers, to those who spin theminto silky threads, to those who weave it on a backstrap loom, each step is done by hand at home.

Yuni Kristina replicates the legendary kawung batik pattern for this crimson shawl of silken textures. Dating back to the 13th century, the kawung features floral motifs in intersecting circles. The pattern was once exclusive to the royal court of the Sultan of Jogjakarta.
