Said to represent the hope that humans will always remember their origins, the kawung batik pattern was once reserved solely for the royal family. In an original design, Java's Yuni Kristina combines a floral pattern and soft colors for a splendid silk shawl with a light and airy feel.

Using batik techniques, Siddique in India creates this pretty, lightweight shawl. The cotton and silk blend fabric features a stamped pattern in green, rose, and orange on dark navy blue.

This breezy cotton gauze shawl is created by the artisans of Consorcio, a women's cooperative in Guatemala that is dedicated to ending poverty and domestic violence. The shawl is woven on a traditional backstrap loom, with hand-knotted fringe at both ends. The abstract patterns are created using natural dyes and batik dyeing techniques.

Yuni Kristina conjures classic Javanese batik patterns in mesmerizing shades of black, gray, and green. Stamped by hand on a luxurious silk shawl, they include the parang, or dagger, once exclusive to the courts of Surakarta and Jogyakarta. Formerly reserved for the sultan's use, flowers and the kawung,--an eight-pointed rosette set within a square, rhombus, or circle-- complement the parang.

Each motif is created by hand, as evidenced by the occasional pencil mark or slight color variations.

Traditional batik hand stamping and updated classic Indonesian motifs come together in this stunning shawl designed by Yuni Kristina. The truntum motif is believed to have been designed by Kanjeng Ratu Kencana, the Queen of Kasutanan Surakarta. It inspired Yuni Kristina to create the star truntum, featured on this silk wrap in shades of moss and jade on an ochre background. While the traditional truntum is characterized by a flower and dot pattern, the star motif featured on this gorgeous shawl introduces a new batik shape that adds depth to the original design.
