"The process for making these small animals was something I learned when I was small...since then it has become a passion of mine," says the Guatemalan artisan, adding that the bird sculpture is made for, "...all of those who love birds." He starts by mixing the clay and carefully shaping the figure, and then he adds aluminum legs and feet. After the bird is fired, he sands it, mixes his own colors and paints the figurine. The result is a charming and meticulous depiction of a burrowing owl complete with characteristic arched eyebrows, mottled coloring, and yellow eyes.

Mauricio is a skilful and dedicated artist and a truly delightful man. We have visited Guatemala on a number of occasions and have visited his stall each time - he is a warm and caring man who deals with his customers as friends. Each visit has been a treat. Being able to add to our collection through NOVICA from an armchair in the UK is an extra bonus.
