The laughing Buddha stands for prosperity, happiness and longevity; Balinese people believe that rubbing his belly will bring good luck and fortune.

From Bali comes this superb depiction of a teaching Buddha as he sits on sacred lotus flowers, his hands making the gesture which represents the transmission and discussion of his teachings known as the Vitarka mudra. The artisan's skill can be seen in details such as the Buddha's headdress, the drape of his robe and his slender fingers. When designing a new piece, master carver Wayan Rendah enjoys letting the wood's characteristics inspire him. In this case he works with hibiscus wood and finishes the statuette in the variegated brown shades typical of this wood.

This beautiful rendition of Buddha seated on a lotus flower is designed and crafted by Wayan Rendah. Using Balinese suar wood, he carves the image by hand with brilliant attention to detail. Each fold and crease of Buddha's robe and lotus petal work is depicted with expert precision. The master sits in a traditional meditative prayer-pose and is sure to bring an aura of peace and calm to your home.

With his pack slung over his shoulder, Buddha takes a stroll down a country road. Balinese artisan Sarwaedi hand-carves a suar wood sculpture, realizing this happy religious figure with an impressive degree of detail. He gives the sculpture a finish that accentuates the natural grain of the wood.
