An angel leads devotees as they praise their beloved Senhora Aparecida as they take part in a procession through their village. Telma Morais successfully transmits the happy festive energy of the occasion as she paints with acrylics in her characteristic naïf style.
As the story goes, in 1917 a group of fishermen were trying their luck, without much success, upon the Paraíba River in the state of São Paulo. They kept at their task, however, and pulled up in their net a statue of the Virgin Mary, her face a rich ebony hue. After that moment, the fishermen reaped fish in abundance from the river. This event was taken as a great sign, and in 1928 Our Appeared Lady was proclaimed the patron saint of Brazil. Her basilica, erected in São Paulo, is second in size only to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City
