Expressionist Portrait Painting, "Woman from the West"

Godwin Atta Geoman captures the pride and beauty of a woman from the Fanti tribe of central and western Ghana. She wears her hair wrapped in a scarf and dresses in traditional style. "These bright clothes are worn mostly during naming ceremonies and festivals," Geoman explains. Adinkra symbols are aligned along one side of the painting; these convey wise sayings and common knowledge.
