Sarita presents this hand-woven shawl as an elegant, unique accessory to add to your wardrobe. The shawl is woven with tussar silk for the warp, spun silk for the weft, and hand-spun matka for the extra weft. Matka is a rough silk fabric made using mulberry silk waste without removing its gum part. The name Damaru, meaning "drum," is inspired by the shawl's drum motif, reminiscent of the Hindu god Lord Shiva's instrument. The geometric patterns in teal, golden yellow, blue, crimson and brown go together beautifully with the grey base. The ends are finished with fringes.
The word jamdani is of Persian origin, jam meaning flower and dani meaning vase. The earliest mention of this type of weave comes from the 3rd century BC, when it was known to Arab, Chinese and Italian travelers and traders. Regarded as the most artistic textile of Bangladesh, jamdani is rich in motifs - akin to tapestry work.
