This unique home accent is from Ruth Guevara in Costa Rica, who was inspired by the myriad purposes of the jicaro or calabash gourd in ancient times. Indigenous peoples would use the gourds in their daily lives as utensils, containers and even musical instruments. Guevara carves the dried gourd by hand, and then accents it with jute twine that is stitched through small holes in the gourd.
