With an expression of dreamy repose, a serene beauty sleeps undisturbed. Indonesian artisan Komang Suastra presents this stunning pendant necklace, featuring a cameo carved from cow bone. The face is crowned with sterling silver and bedecked with 2.5 carats of sparkling blue topaz. Suastra names the necklace after the beautiful woman in a Javanese legend.

The story tells of Dayang Sumbi, a beautiful woman in West Java. She banished her son Sankuriang for disobeying her, in turn receiving the gift of eternal youth from the gods. After many years in exile, Sangkuriang returned home, long after the two had forgotten each other. Sangkuriang fell in love with Dayang Sumbi and decided to marry her, but she recognized him at the last minute. In order to prevent the marriage from taking place, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuriang to complete two impossible tasks before sunrise--building a dam on the river Citarum, and a large boat to cross the river. However, Sangkuriang enlisted mythical creatures to aid him in his tasks, so he was nearly finished as daybreak approached. Dayang Sumbi saw that the tasks were almost completed, so she summoned her workers to spread red silk cloths east of the city, to appear as if it was dawn breaking. Sangkuriang was fooled, and kicked the dam and the unfinished boat in frustration, resulting in terrible flooding and the creation of the volcano Tangkuban Perahu.

The epic poem tells the story of Rama, the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu, who eventually wins Sita in marriage. Displaced as rightful heir to his father's throne, Rama goes into exile with Sita and his brother Lakshmana. Sita is later abducted by the demon-king Ravana. Rama, with the aid of the monkey general Hanoman, searches for Sita and slays Rawana, rescuing her. Rama then regains his throne. Rumors and gossip accuse Sita of adultery during her captivity. Although innocent, she bears Rama's twin sons in exile, sheltered by the hermit Valmiki, the author of the poem. Many years pass, but eventually, Rama and Sita reunite in love. This elegant sculpture by Nyoman Indrawati Subrata of the Subrata Family was created in suar wood which is responsible for the richness of color that can be seen in this masterpiece.

Intricate geometric motifs come to life in radiant colors derived from natural dyes. Artisans of the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco work with ancestral techniques to create fashion for today and always. This elegant ruana cape is woven by hand of fine alpaca wool, prized by the ancient Inca for its lightweight warmth. The cloak of many colors includes red, goldenrod yellow, fuchsia and orange, among others.

The community raises and cares for its own alpacas. The fleece is washed, carded and spun by hand using a pushka, or drop spindle. The dyes come from plants, nuts and tree bark. The next step is one of the most important, as the artisan prepares the warp, or vertical threads for the backstrap loom. This determines the size of the textile, the color combinations, and the patterns that will be woven.

The intensity of color can vary depending on the hardness of the water, the altitude and the local dye sources, making each textile a unique piece of handcrafted art.
