Stern and beautiful, this elegant mask represents the great king who founded the Nigerian town of Ife. Kobina Asmah works in native sese wood to carve the face, adding rich applications of embossed aluminum. The lips, ears and eyes are a deep red. "This is an oduduwa mask," he says. "The word means 'For God' in the Yoruba language."

This sculpture of the Benin Oba is rare, but the item I received did not have the richness of the picture. Also the sculptures coloring on the neck had bed a-lot when the item arrived. This was going to be a culmination moment of my current collection. .
