"Our rugs are unique and filled with life. Each one tells a story and is the work of an incredible woman filled with dreams and desires to create a better future for her family and community."
"In 2006, we had a visit from Jody Slocum and Mary Anne Wise, an artist, writer and teacher of rug hooking. They discovered Guatemala's incredible handwoven clothing but they also saw that many of us in the community lived in extreme poverty and faced discrimination.
"This touched their hearts and they came up with a wonderful plan. In 2009, they returned to teach the first rug-hooking classes to a group of 18 women. This was a huge help because the technique doesn't require a lot of materials, and the rugs are practical and inexpensive.
"This first class led to another seven workshops where the women learned more and different techniques. Many of them learned to draw and combine colors, taking their inspiration from Guatemala's natural beauty.
"By 2011, we all had a great deal of experience and were invited to participate in a rug exhibition in Minnesota's Anderson Center, along with artisans from the US and Canada. A donation made it possible for us to make the trip, and this was just the beginning of some wonderful opportunities.
"As 2013 came to an end, more than 50 women from six highland villages had mastered the skills to create high quality rugs for local and international shoppers. Our rugs received international recognition. In 2014, we decided to work together as a group with the mission of creating financial opportunity for these talented artisans.
"The group is prospering and taking a very important place in society. We hope to be joined by more women in nearby communities so we can teach them this art that has brought us so many blessings and opportunities.
"We seek to empower women, motivating them to continue discovering their abilities as artists. We want them to know the value and importance of their participation in society.
"Our rugs are unique and filled with life. Each one tells a story and is the work of an incredible woman filled with dreams and desires to create a better future for her family and community.
"We are fortunate to have the help of so many people who believed in this art. Thanks to them, we've discovered our talent, a talent that was hidden but that can be seen today in designs filled with happiness and pride.
"We've been through some tough times financially, which made it difficult to venture into something new. But we trusted God and found the motivation to begin with a project that is deeply satisfying."
