This breathtaking retablo portrays the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, a masterful creation handcrafted by Peruvian artisan Alejandro Chavez. Made from wood and meticulously painted by hand in vibrant colors, it embodies the rich tradition of Andean folk art. Surrounding Him are delicate figurines of angels and onlookers, their expressions radiating deep emotion and reverence. Hands crossed in a gesture of reverence, a beautiful deva (angel) strolls through a wooded glade. In Thailand, devas are beings of exquisite grace and beauty who live in the heaven of sensuous pleasure. They often visit earth to help and protect humanity, or to bring messages from the gods. Using only hand tools, Tay Nontawat sculpts this panel of prized teak wood and the finished piece is dried in the sun. Nontawat then adds subtle color and protects it with a coat of lacquer.

"One of the customs we have inherited from our Maya ancestors is to give thanks to Ajaw or God every morning when we wake up and before we eat. We do it by crossing our hands over our heart and bowing, and we also use this gesture to greet our elders," says Jose Canil Ramos as he explains his inspiration. "That's how I came up with the idea of crafting a kneeling angel expressing gratitude the same way we do." Canil carves the sculpture from local pinewood and paints it with vivid detail.
