“Our names are Lidia and Joaquín Ávila and we are husband and wife. Joaquín was born on April 30 in Mexico, and I was born on August 15 in Trinidad, Cuba. We are both artisans who dedicate ourselves to hand painted ceramics.
“We had always had the idea of starting a business of our own, and decided to start importing ceramic pieces and painting. We are inspired by the nature and the colors of the country that welcomed us so well, Costa Rica. The figures we work with are mostly animals, and in the designs of all the pieces we use many bright colors, which make the final product very attractive and full of life.
“Each of us has a special gift for this. I started with painting once I discovered that what I was working on did not fulfill me. I started to investigate how to do things that were totally done by hand, and I realized I had found my passion in the painting. On the other hand, Joaquin grew up with a family member who painted. It always attracted him, but the practice is what has made us both have better skills, and every day we improve our techniques.
“What we like most is that the pieces are very colorful. The most challenging part is to create new painting designs on every piece, and to look for different and attractive pieces to give them our personal touch.
“We are a great team. Together we have overcome different difficulties as well as spending great moments with family. Having a common craft has helped strengthen our relationship. Every day is a new challenge, but I know that together nothing is impossible. We hope that our products are liked by many people. We seek a better future for our family, and what better way to do that than with an art that we are both passionate about and that has given us so much?”
