"Ever since my youth I have been working with textile art, applying painting to fabric with Incan allegories."
Gavino Aguirre Segovia is a textile artisan and painter born in 1932 in Apurimac, located in the Southern region of Peru. He dedicates himself to textile art, painting on fabric in a foliage of colors, expressing the most beautiful images of the Andes, and portraying its customs. His artistic activity was transmitted to him from his ancestors, however he has perfected his art specializing exclusively in working with looms.
"Ever since my youth I have been working with textile art, applying painting to fabric with Incan allegories. All my apprentice work came through hands-on practice. My most representative creations are imbued with Andean themes and daily life. My raw materials include the fabric, painting, glue, canvas stretchers, and brushes - with which I give concrete form to what I conceive of in my imagination. Of course, as does all art, mine carries a message. I transmit all that is Peruvian, and above all, hope.
"I have exhibited my work in specialized fairs in the city of Cuzco. In 1974 I received the 'Gold Medal' prize for the merits of my artistic work. I am confident that with Novica, my work will be known abroad because it not only represents a feeling but also a cultural expression."
Aguirre's beautifully decorated looms produce the effect of a captured rainbow. Each one of his pieces reminds us of the landscapes and places of our highlands whose names will not be forgotten due to his work. Recently, he has also become highly focused on traditional canvases.
