Stars centered by diamonds on this rug symbolize the ojo de Dios (God's eye) glyph. Pointing to the four cardinal points as well as to one's inner self, this legendary motif is regarded as protective. Flavia Ruiz alternates the pattern with wave-like glyphs as she weaves the rug on a pedal loom. From the state of Oaxaca, the beige and grey palette of colors on this Zapotec rug come from natural dyes.
