“My name is Mary Afriyie. I was born in Kwahu-Praso, in the Eastern region of Ghana. I grew up with my grandmother; because I loved being with her, my Mum took me to stay with her at a very tender age. My parents were not together by then. We are four siblings, and I am the first born. As the first born, my siblings always depended on me.
“Due to financial constraints, I couldn't continue to the senior high school level after junior high school. I had to move to Kumasi to stay with my uncle. I would usually help him sell his goods. My uncle offered to take me to school, but that idea also wasn't successful for family reasons.
“After some time I moved to Accra to live with a woman for 5 years. I helped with house chores in the woman's house. After my five-year stay with this woman, she noticed my passion for art, and put me through a sewing school. In the school I learned not just to sew dresses but how to produce accessories. I have also learned some design concepts and color alignments. I have hopes of graduating and owning my business. I also have hopes of making sure I teach the youth who are interested in sewing. I design various kinds of accessories with African printed cloth. It is my aim to grow with NOVICA.”
